Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Recent Legal Requests

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
